Have your tax preparer suggest particular budget lines that should be tracked in detail each and every month to make tax prep easier in addition to keeping a budget. Simply keep those receipts in a folder and viola! Taxes are halfway there at the end of the year.
Another point about budgeting is that it's a good idea to get slightly older kids into the game - what do we NEED vs what do we WANT. This makes requests to stop a fast food places much less frequent since it means that family vacation they want is less likely to happen. I also have my kids putting part of the money they make or receive as allowance into savings every month. They love to watch those savings grow!
