The Handwriting Without Tears Program designed by Jan Olsen is fantastic.  It teaches kids a wonderful way to construct letters in a very kinesthetic way - perfect for most kids!

She uses core shapes and builds all letters from there...the "Magic C" is the first shape the kids learn along with a fun song.  I hightly recommend this program as it's making headway into many school districts because of it's proven success.  Both my girls have lovely handwriting and it's because of this program.

I'd like to suggest my own site, http://www.eslwritingwizard.com as a free resource for practicing handwriting. It's a worksheet maker, but more flexible than most.

We use this in the school that I teach in- they use lots of multisensory techniques to learn how to write- including writing in sand, music, using wooden shapes to make letters, writing in the air- it has a lot of cute stuff! Definitely has to be modified for most children with special needs- there's a lot of language to remember while writing!
