A few years ago, my husband was out of work, so as summer loomed ahead, I started to panic about how to fill the endless days without emptying my wallet. I had the idea of a "Best of" list. I made a large chart on the computer, and posted it in the kitchen. We made it our summer project to vote for the "Best of" as many categories as we could think of. We had best free activity, best craft idea, best playground, best town library, best free outdoor concert, best ice cream flavor, location with the most stairs, location with the shadiest bench, best make believe game to play on a playdate, best part of town for a walk, and on and on. We tried to have at least three candidates for each thing before voting at the end of the summer. We all had a blast, and we felt we had something important to do each day, instead of waking up and seeing a long empty day ahead.
