The somewhat nutty flavor of flaxseed is not only tasty, but the seeds are rich with omega-3 fatty acids (alpha linolenic acid, ALA). More and more, consumers are incorporating the little seeds into their diets for the many health benefits. The brown or golden flaxseeds can help to lower your blood cholesterol, and some experts feel they offer protection against heart disease, diabetes and cancer. You can buy whole, ground or even flaxseed oil. To get the most health benefits, using the ground seeds is recommended.

So, if you want an alternative to fish for your omega-3 oils, incorporate flaxseed into various recipes such as chocolate chip cookies, bread and rolls, plain yogurt and granola. This site has some great information about flaxseed, in addition to recipes.

For kids especially, make sure the seeds are ground or they will not reep the benefits of the seed.
