We all know Rocky ran up its enormous steps in the movie, but the Philadelphia Museum of Art has so much more history to offer visitors and residents. As America's third-largest art museum, it's a spectacular sight towering over the historical city. The building's Greek Revival-style architecture and L-shaped wings incorporate two stories of paintings, sculptures, and decorative artwork. Now, with the renovated and expanded Perelman Building up and running, visitors can enjoy newly acquired exhibits and educational resources.
The Philly Museum features a variety of dining options to make the visit even more pleasing. Consider a guided tour of the museum that includes a stop at the award-winning Museum Restaurant. Or grab a bite to eat at any one of the bistro style spots dotting the museum, including the Balcony Café and coffee bar.
As always, the museum houses new and interesting displays and events. Take a look at the recent exhibits and happenings at Philly's star attraction:
The Bizarre and the Beautiful: Silks of the Eighteenth Century
Cornucopia: Recent Acquisitions in Japanese Art
Colonial Philadelphia Porcelain: The Art of Bonnin and Morris
Art After Five: Recognized Jazz Greats and Emerging Musical Talents
Friday evening tours: special themes and events make for a local hotspot
Subscribe to the museum's free audio podcasts with Apple's iTunes or other podcast software and take a self-guided tour. Also, listen or download individual audio mp3s through the site.
Age-specific classes for children: Masterpieces in the Museum helps children explore art with creative studio programs. A museum guide teaches children through fun experiences followed by studio-projects. (Added fee for this service.)
