CNN has a helpful article on how to find reliable medication information on the internet. I work in medical publishing, so I think this is a good guide for laypeople. Here's the short and dirty:
1. Use search engines that screen out the garbage for you. (My tip: use Google to enter a search word and then have Google limit your search to .gov sites. Example: Type "eczema site:.gov")
2. Find smart bloggers with your disease
3. Invest 30 minutes in the pubmed.gov tutorial (This is if you want really technical information and a lot of the time the full study requires a subscription.)
4. Click on information about annual meetings (Again, this can get pretty technical.)
5. When in doubt about a Web site, click on "about us" (This will tell you who sponsors or runs the site. If it's a pharmaceutical or medical device company, you may not be getting an unbiased picture.)
