With gas prices soaring the way they are it's a great time to incorporate more walking into our daily lives - both for better health and less time at the gas pump.  I found several great ideas in FamilyFun Magazine to help incorporate more walking into our daily lives.

Get a Pedometer
Want your family to get into the walking habit together?  Get everyone a pedometer and establish a family goal.  For instance, pick a location and find out how many steps it would take to get there and aim for that over time (i.e. Grandma's house, Disneyworld, etc).  (You can use this handy conversion chart to translate steps into miles).  Or, try tallying your steps per week and figure out where you could have gone if you walked in a straight line.   Make it a family affair.  You can help your kids set a steps-per-day goal and pretty soon, you just might see your kids walking more and sitting less.  It's addicting!

Start a Walking School Bus
Pick a place to meet and have adults take turns escorting all the kids to and from school on foot.  Even just once a week or every other week in the nice weather would be great!

Park Far Away
Whenever practical, choose the parking spot furthest away from your destination and use that extra walking time to talk with your kids.

One More Round
After you've finished shopping, take an extra lap around the mall.  For fun, try to guess how many "shoe stores" or "jewelry stores" you will pass on your way.
