To west of Sequim, Washington is the town of Port Angeles and the entrance to the Olympic National Park's Hurricane Ridge on Washington's Olympic Peninsula. This would be another place of interest to hikers visiting Washington State. Once inside, it is a winding 17 mile drive to the Visitor Center 5240 feet above sea level. While there are spectacular views at the center, a more spectacular view awaits just a short trip past the center (in distance; but, not in time). To reach this view, drive 1.3 miles to the Sunrise Point parking area (a narrow winding road not for the faint hearted). From there, it is a 2.2 mile hike to the top of Mount Angeles via a paved path to the 5900 foot elevation (a few steep grades starting about a mile in) followed by a technical; but, not difficult in nature 550 feet to the 6450 foot elevation. From the elevation vantage point is a view of Port Angeles, the Strait of Juan deFuca, and Victoria BC on Vancouver Island on the other side of the Strait. It is an all day trip from Seattle to the top of Mount Angeles; but, well worth the effort. For more about Hurricane Ridge and for more about the Olympic National Park (a national park ranging from a temperate rain forest to glacial peaks).
