A Very Important Environmental Contribution By A Child
Ages:
General Interest
By:MileHighMom

There is one chore my son (age 9) loves to take charge of.  There is never a rebuttal, whining, or other creative ways around his important duty to family & Mother Earth.  He is always happy to help.

What is this duty you ask?  Collecting, reusing and refilling waterbottles for our entire family.  Why is my son so excited about his chore?  The reason is simple.  He understands the value of his work, and understands the world impact of his actions.  My son has learned at a very young age the impact waterbottles have on our environment.  He is happy to take on the family responsiblity of refilling waterbottles in our household for everyday use.  He contributes immensely to the family, and to a clean environment for all of us.

The number one reason why so many of us still use water bottles is convenience.  My family has several filled, reusable waterbottles (and refilled, one-time use bottles) conveniently placed in the fridge and on the counter top, so my busy family can grab one on the way out the door.  Now that's convenience!

Tip: Even if you do buy non-refillable waterbottles occationally for convience, refill them and reuse them again & again, until they are unusable & then place them in the recyling bend.  Using them only once is such a waste!

Getting my children to help with chores routinely has sometimes been a challenge.  I no longer have this issue now that my son understands the importance of his contribution.  I only wish parents would place a high value on environmental contributions.

I agree with you Lisa O. I have 3 children in school and a hubby that works out of town. There fore i am saying that the investment that you will/should make by buying sturdy water bottles will pay for itself in a very short time, over and over again. My kids defiantly know the importance of reusing, and recycling . "If you can't reuse it, don't buy it. There is a different way!!

I take it a step further and have bought a Klean Kanteen or insulated Thermos - both made of stainless steel - for all of us (even the babies), and we never have to waste anything or buy anything more. I love them. The insulated Thermos also keeps my water ice-cold all day here in the hot weather.

The majority of our reusable waterbottles are very sturdy and have lasted for a long -long time. I am simply stating we re-use every water bottle of every kind. There is no problem re-using the commercial water bottles, but of course wash them 1st in hot water! (You cannot put them in the dishwasher.)

I believe reusing plastic bottles is not recommended due to bacteria. I would advise using more sturdy bottles that can be sterilized easily without damage...
