Just yesterday, I came across an advertisement in a parenting magazine that said in a reassuring tone that high fructose corn syrup was harmless. Yeah, right! Honestly, we already have enough reasons to avoid high fructose corn syrup, the ubiquitous sweetener that has made its way into our foods. However, this new reason is so scary that it will have you reading nutrition labels more carefully than ever. Find out more about this reason here.
High fructose corn syrup (HFCS) gets its name because of its chemical composition of 80% fructose, and 20% glucose, as compared to cane sugar which is 50%glucose, and 50%fructose. The high fructose content of HFCS has been linked to diabetes, hypertension, and obesity among other diseases.
