Here's an interesting fact for you: It is estimated that more than 18 billion disposable diapers end up in landfills each year. On top of that, diapers can take up to 500 years to fully decompose. What's the answer? Baby cloth diapers, of course!
Of all the cloth diapers available on the market, my personal favorite, and the ones I used, are the
Fuzzi Bunz Baby Cloth Pocket Diaper
There are so many advantages to using baby cloth diapers that it's hard to know where to start.
Obviously, there is the waste issue. When you consider the fact that the average baby goes through more than 6,000 diapers in the first two years of life alone, you realize that's a lot of diapers! There is an enormous cost with using disposable diapers as well.
The Fuzzi Bunz Baby Cloth Pocket Diaper cost under $20 a piece. When you think about the initial cost, it sounds like a lot for just one diaper. However, if you consider the recurring cost of disposable diapers, you'll quickly realize that cloth diapers represent a large savings in the long run.
What I really liked about these particular diapers is that they have use a pocket system, which allows you to slip in additional layers of interior padding as needed. It makes washing much simpler and helps to keep moisture away from your baby's bottom.
I also liked the fact that these diapers had lots of snaps that were easy to use and helped to keep the diaper just where it should be. No more pins, which I never could figure out how to use properly. Just like disposable diapers, these cloth diapers also have elastic around the leg area and I very seldomly had to deal with leaks and messes. They're extremely easy to clean as well.
In the end, I estimate, rather conservatively, that I saved at least $1,500 by using baby cloth diapers. On top of that, I feel good about not adding thousands of diapers to an already over-flowing landfill system.
