Are you home schooling your kids, but feel like you need more support? Have you looked for a homeschooling support group in your area, but none seem to exist? Maybe you already belong to a homeschooling support group, but it's not convenient for you beause of location, or you'd really like to have a different group that better meets your needs. It's a fact, families that home school do better when they have the support of others who are doing the same thing. You and your children will likely be happier and healthier if you have a support system, not to mention other people to talk to and do things with.
If you can't find the perfect group for you, or there isn't one at all, why not start your own? It takes a little bit of work, but the rewards are well worth it. You'll have to think about the goals of the group that you'd like to form. You'll also have to consider the structure of your group. Will it be a group that gets together on a weekly basis, or will it just be a loose group of people who can call eachother for information and resources? There are lots of things you can aim for, from getting together for field trips, to teaching each others children different subjects. Decide what kind of group that you want and how it will be structured.
Now you are ready to start getting the word out. If you already know some home schooling families, this part is easy. If you don't, you'll have to get a little bit creative. You can let churches know about your homeschooling support group and ask them to pass information on to families in their congregation that home school their children. You can also post ads on Craigs List and other internet forums to let people in your community know of your plans. If you have a community library or YMCA, you can likely find families there.
There are so many benefits to having a homeschooling support grop. You can share information about homeschooling curriculum, have other kids for your own children to do things with, and have other parents to talk to who understand your situation. When you are home all day teaching your children, sometimes that is exactly what you need!
