One of the most exciting things about pregnancy, for me at least, was getting to choose and buy baby furniture. I had the best time spending hours browsing through catalogs and stores looking for the perfect baby furniture. After three babies, I learned a thing or two about furniture buying, especially if you are on a budget. Hope these tips will help you as you choose items for your babies room.
Make the crib your most important purchase. This is the most important thing that you'll buy, because your baby will sleep in it. Dressers and other items can be refinished and fixed up, but you want to make sure that you purchase a baby crib that it safe. You can definitely get a good deal on a used crib, but make sure you check for recalls and have someone who understands how things go together look it over very carefully to make sure it's safe.
When buying a crib, consider one that converts into a bed for additional use. This is one thing I wish I had done; those first years fly by and before you know it, you're back at the store buying a bed.
If money is tight and you can't get all the baby furniture that you want, consider forgoing the changing table. Most parents realize that they don't use them that much and the money would have been better spent on a nice dresser set that could have been used for years. A bookshelf is a great place to keep diapers, wipes, onesies, etc. and can be used for books as your baby grows.
Another item that you may want to take off your list if money is tight is the bassinet. They are so cute and so sweet that they are hard to resist. If you have plenty of money, knock yourself out and buy one - but don't feel bad if you can't. My babies stayed in theirs for about 6 weeks...I figure it cost about $4 a night for the time they used it. Certainly not a necessity.
When shopping for baby furniture, take your time in order to get the best deal. Most stores that specialize in baby items have mailing lists - get on them so that you will be aware of upcoming sales. Start shopping early so that you can buy when you are able to get the best deal. Don't forget to check online for deals as well.
All parents want their babies to have the perfect room. If money is tight and you are on the lookout for cheap baby furniture, don't feel bad if you can't afford the perfect matching set. You may end up much happier buying some pieces that your baby can use for many years to come.
