Year ago when I was a kid, my parents bought a motor home to take us out west for a summer - when we got home they sold it. That must have been before renting an RV was a possibility...
I don't come from a family that gets a lot of enjoyment from camping, our minimum requirements usually include at least a 4-star hotel with room service. However, that summer trip out west was one of the most memorable of my life. We got out of our comfort zone, had to live in extremely close quarters for seven full weeks, and saw things we had never seen before and it was amazing.
Even if you aren't a family that enjoys camping, renting an RV for vacation can be a great experience for your entire family. It's a great way to connect as a family and will provide memories that will last a lifetime.
The best thing is that it can be an economical way to vacation, especially if gas prices stay low. Campgrounds are cheaper than hotels and you'll likely do lots of cooking instead of eating out.
Seriously, don't write this idea off just because you've never done it before or you think that you don't like camping. Renting an RV provides lots of new opportunities. Besides, you can rent a really fancy RV if you want (and you have the money), so it's almost like staying in a hotel.
