If you are expecting a baby in the late summer or early fall, you've got some long, hot months ahead of you. Spending the summer months pregnant can be trying, to say the least. I gave birth to my first baby in late June and that was enough to make me plan my next two for March and April! You can make it through a summer pregnancy with the least amount of discomfort, you'll just have to be prepared!
Here are some pregnancy tips to help you get through that long summer pregnancy:
Most important, have cold water with you at all times. Water is important for anyone, but it's especially important when you are pregnant. Stay hydrated and you are bound to feel better.
Make sure that you dress in cool clothing. You'll be much more comfortable if you are wearing comfortable clothes. Focus on light colored clothes and wear cotton or linen for the most comfort.
Plan for extra fatigue. Being pregnant is exhausting work. Being pregnant in the summer is even more exhausting! Find times to take naps, or at least to sit down and put your feet up.
Stay indoors during the hottest times of the day. Plan to run errands during the early morning or in the evening instead of running around during the afternoon.
Use a cool washcloth on your forehead to stay cool on hot days.
Don't spend time in the kitchen making fancy meals. The heat of the oven will only irritate you more. Instead, make cold salads and other dishes that don't require a lot of cooking or use the grill.
Cut down on salt intake and take time every day to put your feet up to keep swelling to a minimum.
Ask for help. It's not easy being almost ready to have a baby when it's 100 degrees! Don't feel like you have to do everyhing.
If all else fails, fill your bathtub with cold water, add all the ice that you have in your freezer and get in!
Keep reminding yourself that your summer pregnancy will soon be over and by next year, you'll be spending the summer outdoors playing with your baby...who will likely just be starting to walk!
