Melissa & Doug Responsibility Chart

A lot of parents have different opinions on responsibility charts; some swear by them and others say they are a waste of time and don't do anything.  I've personally always wanted to use one, but I'd constantly forget to print new ones or I'd run out of stickers to put on them, or I'd just forget to fill them out.

Recently I found the Melissa and Doug Responsibility Chart and I'm hooked.  Like all Melissa and Doug products, it's extremely well-made and my kids love it.

It's a pretty simple concept really.  It's a magnetic board that you can hang on the wall and it comes with a whole bunch of pre-printed responsibilities, like "say please and thank you," "wash dishes," "do homework," etc. It also comes with a number of blank magnets that allow you to create your own responsibilities that are specific to your child.

Simply move the responsibilities that you want your child to work on to the top of the board.  When they complete something they are supposed to do, they can add a smiley face to the corresponding item and day of the week.  If you want to change the things they need to do the following week, just swich out the responsibility magnet to something new.

We have two hanging in the kitchen and my kids love to use them.  I let them help pick their responsibilities each week. They get to put the smiley faces next to the things they complete and at the end of the week they get a treat for having a lot of smiley faces. For example, whoever has the most in a week gets to pick what we do for family night.

If you've wanted to use a responsibility chart for your kids, but haven't been able to make a go of it, I highly recommend trying out the Magnetic Responsibility Chart. by Melissa and Doug.  Like all of their products it's high-quality and well-made and kids love it!

I don't know if these charts are always good. Sometimes I think they increase power struggles and make life more stressful for parents. Here is a good article to help determine when they can work and not work: http://www.claudialuiz.com/REWARDS.html

I guess it depends on your kids. I use it with my 8 year old and she loves it. My 13-year old is not so keen on responsibility charts anymore...with her I just take the computer and TV cord away until she does her work! ;-)

Is this responsibility chart too young for a 9 and 13 year old?

I also found basically the same one at Target for 1/2 the price $10 instead of $20. We love it too!
