Have Fun Studying for a Spelling Test
Ages:
General Interest
By:Kathymcbain

My daughter does not like studying for her spelling tests. In fact, she really, really hates studying for them. Earlier this year, I'd spend at least an hour a day arguing with her about going over 15 words.  Needless to say, it was getting a little ridiculous - for all of us.  I finally decided that I'd have to get creative with spelling test studies or we'd all go crazy!

We've worked hard to make spelling fun - I hope these ideas will help others make studying more tolerable - or even fun!

~ Pour some rice in the bottom of a 9 X 13 baking dish or on a cookie sheet.  Enough to just cover the bottom is perfect.  Have your child write out their words in the rice. After you're done, you can save it for the next time.

~ Use letters from a Scrabble game to have them study for a spelling test. You say the words and they have to make them with the letters.

~ My daughter's favorite is studying with shaving cream. I'll put some on the bathtub wall and have her write the words in the shaving cream while she takes a bath.

~ Write all of the spelling words on small pieces of paper. Write them twice - once with the correct spelling and once with an incorrect spelling of the word.  Have them separate them into two piles - the right spelling and the wrong spelling.

~ Let your child test you. Intentionally spell some of the words incorrectly to see if they catch and correct your mistake.

~  Let your child write the words on a chalkboard or whiteboard. For some reason, my daughter will write them this way, even though she hates to do it on paper.

~ Give them a paint brush and some water and have them paint the words on the sidewalk or driveway.

~ Type the words. I'm not sure why this is so appealing, but my daughter loves to sit at the computer and type the words.

~ Have a spelling test the night before the actual test. Every Thursday my daugther and I are the students and my husband is the teacher. We both have to take the test. Since my daughter can be a little competitive, she loves to see if she can get a better grade than me.

I hope this makes studying for that next spelling test a little more fun for you and your kids!

Thank you so much, as much as my 8 year old hates studying for her spelling test and loves to type on the computer, I have never thought of her typing the words. What a great idea.

Thank you for the tips! I am a teacher and know a lot of tricks to make studying the spelling words more interesting, but I still could get some new ideas from you.

Thanks so much for the tips. I'm the Grandma and have homework duty for a lst grader every afternoon ( and I'm not smarter than a 1st grader!). I think this will take the drudgery out of it.

Thanks for these tips! Computer spelling and chalkboard spelling have been my daughters favorites as well...funny how that works!
