North Dakota is not exactly anyone's dream vacation spot. However, that doesn't mean that you should completely write off the idea of ever visiting North Dakota. There is actually quite a bit of history in the state and there's a little city on the far west side of the state called Medora, which is a wonderful place to take the family.

Most people think that the Badlands are just in South Dakota, but they actually extend into North Dakota as well and Medora is right smack dab in the middle of them.  It was part of the journey out west long ago and now has been turned into a cute little tourist town.

If camping is your thing, there is plenty of great camping in the area. There are also lots of nice hotels in Medora if camping isn't your thing.

While you are there, there is plenty to see and do. The Theodore Roosevelt National Park is close by - and marks the place where Teddy hunted and then bought land. He actually said once that he would have never been president had he not spent time in North Dakota - really, he did!!

The most popular part of Medora though is the pitchfork fondue and the Medora Musical. It happens every night during the summer months and it's wildly popular with those visiting the area.

During the day, you can see plenty of prarie dogs, buffalo, moose, elk, and more wildlife.  You are also quite close to the South Dakota badlands, Mount Rushmore and numerous other historical places. General Custer's home is in Mandan (a small town close to Bismarck) and that also marks the location of a battle between the cowboys and the Indians.

If you are looking for a completely different vacation idea that's full of history, don't mark Medora or the state of North Dakota off your list.

My family and I have driven across both North and South Dakota over the years and I truly enjoy the peace and quiet of ND. Also, if you RV, most towns have small parks for overnight camping and electrical hook ups ($3/night at some). Also, drive the Enchanted Highway where giant sculptures abound. There's plenty to do in North Dakota.
