Melatonin and Sleep
Ages:
General Interest
By:Kathymcbain

One of my daughters has an extremely hard time falling asleep. She's been that way since she was very small and it's been difficult on our whole family, to say the least.  Even worse, she often wakes up a few hours after she falls asleep and then has a hard time falling back asleep again.

Anyway recently her pediatrician suggested that I use melatonin to help my daughter sleep.  I was a little bit skeptical to give her anything at first, but after he expained to me that it's all natural and is not addictive at all, I decided to try it.  While it doesn't make her groggy out "out of it," it does help her to fall asleep and stay asleep.

I wouldn't suggest anyone give it to their child without first talking to your own pediatrician, but melatonin may be a great option for your children (or you!) if you have a hard time falling asleep at night.

I recently started using melatonin with 3 year old ( my pediatircain recommended it). I give her 1.5 mg 1/2 hour before bed time and she is falls asleep easily and wakes up rested. Before that it was a battle every night. We elimitated naps and she still would not fall asleep until 10-11 at night ( we put her to bed at 8). She would have a very difficult time waking up inthe morning. The Doctor recommended using it for a few weeks to see if it would reset her system. I am really not looking forward to taking her off the melatonin.

We have been giving my son (doctor recommended) Melotonin for about 2 years now. He is 8 and has ADHD. But he started taking it before the ADHD diagnosis. He had a hard time "quieting his brain" to fall asleep. He takes half a 3 mg pill. All natural - your body makes melotonin to fall asleep. It has been a life saver for him. He feels so much better in the morning.

My son, now 18yrs. old (Bipolar and ADHD) has been taking Melatonin for 2 yrs. now. The Melatonin worked when we first started using it but, now it does not work. Doctors blame his fast matabolism. The Doctors have no clue how much to give him. I am not sure what a safe dosage is. I would much rather have my son on natural medication than all of these chemicals that we find out later have extremely adverse side effects. Anybody know what is safe?

My son who is 8 and has Autism, for years would get about 3 - 4 hours of sleep a night. It is very common for children with Autism to have sleep difficulties. Our pediatrician recommended Melatonin and it has been a lifesaver. My son finally gets a healthy amount of sleep every night and functions much better due to the sleep he now gets.

My son (8) has ADHD and had a hard time staying asleep. His doctor recommended Meletonin and it works beautifully. I have used it on occasions when I am too tired or stressed to go to sleep.

Melatonin does wonders for my family and I have a few friends who use it for their kids as well. Totally natural, safe, and child friendly. My son (8) has bipolar disorder and sleep is imperative. He uses 3 mg every night (about an hour and half before bedtime) and my daughter (6) has a hard time falling asleep because she thinks so much at bedtime. She also uses 3 mg. I use it as well.
