Growing up, we always had roast beef and mashed potatoes with apple pie every single Sunday noon after church. My mom would peel all her potatoes on Saturday night and on Sunday morning she'd peel and slice the apples for the pie. It seemed like an awful lot of work to me so I didn't carry on the tradtition when I moved out and had a family of my own.
That is, until I bought an apple peeler. I initially bought one from Pampered Chef. I loved it and I used it all the time, but it somehow got misplaced during a move a few years ago. Once I was at my new home, I didn't know any Pampered Chef sales reps and so I started looking around for another option.
I finally found the Back To Basics Apple and Potato Peeler and we are happily eating roast beef, mashed potatoes, and apple pie on Sundays again.
If your family eats a lot of potatos and/or apples, this is a must-have kitchen gadget. I never could get the hang of peeling stuff propery and I always ended up frustrated and irritated by the time I was part way through the job.
The apple peeler by Back to Basics does a really good job and it's quite cheap for all the time that it saves in the kitchen. There is a suction cup on the bottom which keeps it stuck to the counter reasonably well (I've had a mishap or two, but they were probably more my fault than the peelers). It's made of cast iron and stainless steel so I feel good that it will last for years to come.
