Chattanooga, TN is one of my favorite "down south" places in the United States. Full of cool, family friendly things to do, it's also extremely reasonable to visit and stay there. Of all the things to do there, one of our very favorite things to do is to visit Ruby Falls in Chattanooga.
It's home to the largest "indoor" waterfall in the world and it's extremely cool! Ruby Falls is part of a cave inside of Lookout Mountain. It has a colorful and varied history that dates back to the 1800's. After being closed for some time in the early 1900's, it was reopened in about 1935 for tours and it's been a popular spot ever since.
The falls are spectacular, but kids will probably enjoy all of the strange formations that are also present in the cave. For $15.95 per adut and $7.95 per child, you can go on a 1.5 hour tour of this amazing natural wonder. It's a great way to teach kids a thing or two about both history and geology and it's really cool as well.
If you're planning a vacation for this summer, but don't know where you want to go, I highly recommend Chattanooga. There are so many things to do and Ruby Falls is just the tip of the iceberg. There are tons of great Chattanooga Hotels, most of which are extremely reasonably priced. There is also plenty of state parks and camping options in the area. With so much to do, both inside and out, it's a great place to go with kids.
If you are only driving through the area, Ruby Falls is still worth a stop on your way. It's a wonderful way to get out of the car for a few hours and you'll enjoy seeing this amazing natural phenomenon.
