Family Game night is a great way to spend time together. And although we really enjoy the Wii (Mario Kart is indeed a family addiction), but we also really have fun sitting down to a good old fashioned board game.
Here are a few of our most recent favorites:
Make & Break - Building game by Ravensberger
Space Faces - Visual searching game with colorful aliens
Blokus Trigon - Strategic shape game, with a fun twist on the original game
Clue - I recommend the library version that fold up inside a nice looking wooden book. (Target stores)
Uno - Color coded card game that's really fun for the entire family
All of these are suitable for ages 5+. Family Game night is a great way to spend time together. Find a board game or two that your family enjoys and sit down and play!
Scrambled States Game - A quirky fun way to learn states & capitals
If you are not already familiar with the Scrambled States of America Book, this game is a direct spin off from that. The book, is a really cute story about all 50 states (each with their own quirky personality) and how they've gotten bored with their location. (It's hilarious, actually). They decide to switch places with one another, which sounds like a good idea at first but by the end they realize in the end, that there is no place like home.
The Scrambled States Game expands on the quirky little states and their personalities and becomes a fun interactive challenger for 2-4 players. Basically you deal each player 5 blue state cards, and each person gets their own colorful US. Map. Then you flip over a red "scrambled" card for the next challenge. It could be to find a state with a capitol that begins with A, or that has two syllables, or is west of Kansas, or to find a state that touches at least six other states, etc.. Then there are "Go the Distance" challenges to see who has a state card closest to, say, Kentucky. Whoever has a card that matches that description must be the first to call it out. The player with the most states wins.
The drawings of the states are so cute and each card (like a baseball card) gives specific information about each state that is easy to read & remember.
