The flu season is officially here. Are you ready? Many of us prepare by getting a flu shot, stocking up on hand sanitizer and touching surfaces, especially in public places, as little as possible. These are some great ways to help boost your immune system's ability to fight viruses, but did you know that there is another way? Adding certain foods to your diet can boost your immunity and if eaten regularly can help you stay healthy.
Tops foods for the flu season
- yogurt: certain bacteria can help your immune system. Look for yogurt that contains "live, active cultures". Yogurt also contains vitamin D. Low levels of vitamin D have been associated with a heightened risk for respiratory infections like the flu.
- kefir: fermented milk drink made with kefir grains, which contains probotics or "good" bacteria. Probiotic bacteria boosts T-cell production which increase the body's immune response to viruses.
- tea: contains polyphenols, which acts like an antioxidant to help protect cells. Green and white teas are the best, however all teas have some benefit.
- lean protein: has negative effects on T-cells and can help boost immunity
- citrus fruits: fruits such as pink grapefruits, mangoes, and are all rich in vitamin C
- brazil nuts: contain zinc, which is known to improve the number of infection-fighting T-cells that also has antioxidant properties.
- garlic: allicin, an antioxidant, is released when garlic is chopped.
To prevent illness, please keep in mind that it's also important to get a lot of rest, exercise regularly, follow a healthy diet and not skip meals. If you do experience flu like symptoms be sure to see your doctor.
