This afternoon while the grandkids were here I added water softener salt to the system and of course this opened up all kinds of questions from their inquiring minds so I took the opportunity to teach them the difference between soft water, hard water and water that is polluted. I told them that while we have some problems here in the US, it didn't compare to other developing countries around the world. A quick trip to the google and I came across the Peace Corps site that gives kids a great educational introduction as to what conditions are like in underdeveloped villages, and ways to improve the quality of life.
It's an interactive site filled with a lot of information about a rural village and the problems they have to solve to sustain themselves. Navigating the site can seem a bit confusing at first, because you have to click on the map, find the source of the problem, and then choose the best solution. If you get lost or confused, click on Narina. You might want to get familiar with the site before you introduce it to your children, but it's worth it. I have to say, we spent almost an hour exploring the village. While some of the information seemed a little advanced for their age, for the most part, they really had fun, especially with the fishing, and they learned a great deal.
