This was a very fun trip!  What a lot of different types of animals that you'd never expect in the middle of Mendon!  The Deer Forest was a big hit-being able to walk into the enclosure and be up close to that many deer!  But our favorite part of the day, by far, was the elephant ride!  Being able to actually touch such a huge animal, and feeling how gentle they were as we rode, was fantastic!  We still talk about it, months later!  There were also some amusement-park type rides, but we managed to skip most of them (being more interested in the animals).  Lunch was pretty expensive, so I'd pack a picnic.  A fun day!

I saw an ad on TV for this zoo earlier this year. I have been waiting patiently for a good weekend to make the trip down from Derry, NH. The ride was about 90 minutes and pretty straight-forward. I like how Southwick's puts their address instead of just directions for us GPS users. I really like this zoo compared to say York's up in Maine. For the most part you can take pictures of all the large animals without shooting through a fence. This is a real pain for anyone with a camera. The Train/tram ride was great. We saw a pair of white swans, lots of turtles, and a herd of Elk which were within inches of the train/tram. We didn't see any red-tailed hawks or Blue Herons on the day we went. You can bring your own food and drinks and there are plenty of places to sit and eat. The wide open deer forest is great and you can walk around and see the wildlife. It cost 50 cents for a handful of corn to feed the deer. The animals will come right up to you for the most part and eat right out of your hand if you're an adult. Lots of the animals seem skittish around smaller children. There is a future bear exhibit listed on the zoo map and I hope it's more of the wide open without fence. I'd rate this 4.5 stars out of 5 for New England. Once the new sky ride and bear exhibits are in place it should be closer to a 5. I'm not saying this is the San Diego Zoo but it's probably the best in New England. I'll be posting pictures from my trip on my website. http://www.petelanglois.net
