If you live in or near Wellesley and have a child 8 years old or under, you should consider joining the Wellesley Mothers Forum. They offer lectures, children's activities, playgroups, a working moms' group and a monthly member newsletter. WMF also has a helping hands volunteer group that often delivers food to new mothers - see a Boston Globe article on this here. They have a great website and list their upcoming lectures.
