Need a day of activities-mostly free? Check out Slater Memorial Park in Pawtucket, RI. It's one of our favorites. The park features a Louf carousel-one of the oldest around-with beautiful, carved wooden horses. You can ride the carousel for just 25 cents. A snack bar offers popcorn and drinks.
Take a walk from the carousel over to Dagget Farm which is like a small petting zoo with a lot of chickens, a few pigs, goats, sheep, a pony or two, and some rabbits. There's also a play area with lots of plastic toys for little ones. Entry is free. Right next to the farm are several concession stands where you can buy a full meal (there's a new seafood place we haven't tried out yet), an ice cream or a snack. Just beyond the food is the Pawtucket animal shelter. My kids love going by to say hi to the dogs. And just past the shelter is a fabulous playground with areas for the under five set and the over five set including a climbing wall. The playground was redone within the past year and really is first-rate.
Come by on a Tuesday evening or Wednesday morning during the summer and you'll find a free family concert. I couldn't find a website for the park itself, but if you check out the Pawtucket City site and click on Points of Interest, you'll get some information.
The easiest way to get to the park if you're not familiar with the area is to exit 95 at 2A and head south on Route 1A. Route 1A becomes Newport Ave. and you will see the entrance to Slater Memorial Park on your left.
