We discovered the Discovery Museums in Acton when Children's Museum was closed.  It's a house converted into a children's museum. Every room has a different theme (jungle, trains, etc.). Our son was only 12 months when we went, and there was a toddler-focused room that he didn't feel overwhelmed in.  There is a separate science museum for older kids. http://www.discoverymuseums.org/
