Looking for a safe web gateway for kids? Check out KidsKonnect! Published by a retired elementary school educator, KidsKonnect scours the internet for good websites for kids with 4 goals in mind:

  • create a site that allowed children to safely and effectively utilize the Internet
  • make sure it covered the curriculm areas taught in school.
  • make sure there were lots of fun sites for kids to visit.
  • keep the site free so that all children could use it.

You can browse the websites by subject, an alphabetical listing or use the search function. Links to "New Sites" as well as "Most Popular," provide additional entry point for this great site. Topic categories include:

  • Animals
  • Countries/Places
  • Fun and Informational
  • Games/Puzzles
  • Geography
  • History
  • Holidays/Seasons
  • Language Arts
  • Math
  • Music
  • People

A site for K-5? When I went to it the front page included a survey re: how much Middle East coverage you're watching (none for my 6-yr-old, thanks. We talk generically about war and about needing to resolve differences (at all scales) peacefully but he is not ready for 4-yr-olds' heads blasted off). Further down, also on the front page, was an ad for IMVU (or something like that) with female figures with exaggerated curves modeling all sorts of skimpy clothes as avitars. I don't want him hanging out with kids who think that's how girls should be attracting attention. There are icons for 5 categories of sites, which did not seem to work at first. Turns out they only change the bottom part of the page, not what you're looking at when you click. The sites listed here are a real hodge-podge, some OK, some boring. I don't see why pages of sites on Prince William or Oprah Winfrey need to be included. Common Sense Media does a MUCH better job of sorting through internet options for kids.
