Every where we look we see trees and since there are so many trees we never think about them disappearing.  We seldom stop to look at how beautiful they are.  We just assume they will always be here.  Well if we don’t start reducing our paper usage then they will disappear.  It probably won’t be in our lifetime, but we have to think about our children, our grandchildren and so on.  There are many ways we can reduce our paper usage.

  1. Cancel all catalog subscriptions.
  2. Get off junkmail list.  Get off junk mail lists by sending a post card to Mail Preferences Service c/o Direct Marketing Association, PO Box 9008 Farmingdale, NY, 11735. Include all the various ways your name is spelled on your junk mail. Or go to:  http://www.dmaconsumers.org/cgi/offmailinglistdave/
  3. Instead of using tissues use a handkerchief when blowing your nose.
  4. Instead of paper towels use cloth towels and rags.
  5. Instead of paper napkins use cloth napkins.
  6. Instead of using post it notes or paper to write notes on use a dry erase board.
  7. Buy recycled paper.
  8. Instead of print magazine subscriptions switch to the online version.
  9. Use e-mail instead of faxes.
  10. Use direct deposit.
  11. Sign up for e-statements and get your statements and bills through e-mail.
  12. Cancel your newspaper subscription and read news online.
  13. Use your debit card instead of writing checks.
  14. Read library books instead of buying new books.
I know we can’t completely elimate the use of paper, but we can recycle the paper that we do use. Here are some great links about paper. How paper is recycled How paper is madeI would love to hear your ideas on reducing paper waste.

My husband brings home "used" paper from his office and we print most of our documents on it. It's both green and saves us money.
