I know everyone is promoting going green and I think it's a good idea. Sometimes it costs a little to get going but the savings in money and natural resources make it worth it. Here's a few things I have done and some ideas. Pick one or two and get started.
Lighting
Those cute little swirl light bulbs really are worth the price and sometimes you can get them on sale. They save a lot of energy and provide such a warm, homey light. I love them.
Laundry
My opinion is not to use Tide laundry detergent. I know a lot of people l ove it but it's petroleum based and very bad. A friend told me that Tide will eventually eat the lining of your washing machine. Try Purex. It's cheaper, safer, and wonderful. Also dry your clothes outside if you can or put up lines in a spare room. I saved $30 a month on my electric bill just by not using my dryer. If you don't like stiff clothes pop them in the dryer on fluff for 15 minutes.
Cleaning
There is a cleaning product out that uses orange oil. It's more environmentally friendly and smells heavenly. Also if you use Swiffer products, stop doing it. I know the ads say that your home is not clean if you don't use Swiffer, but it just adds to the amount of garbage we create and adds up in cost. Use Pledge on your feather duster or just spray it on an old facecloth. Things get just as clean and the amount of garbage is reduced. Change your mop head often or use one that is washable.
Pets
Use the clay cat litter if you have a litter box. It's cheaper and much more natural. This will sound disgusting, but used cat litter melts ice very well. It's great if you have a dirt driveway. Remove the solids first. The cold winter air will cut down on the smell. Hey, I know it sounds gross but I was faced with a driveway 6 inches deep in ice and no salt. I figured it would add traction. It did work and worked well.
Heating
You've probably heard this one but open your curtains on sunny days if you live in a cold area. Solar heating is free. I also have some solar curtains. They are kind of like aluminum foil pieces that reflect heat back into the room. Insulating your home helps too. Both of these also help when it's hot. Heating oil and air conditioning are expensive. Use ceilling fans and window fans to cool the house and save electricity.
Trees
This is kind of a strange tip but planting trees in your yard will help with all kinds of things. Trees clean the air and shade the house in the hot summer months.
If you do one or two of these things you will save money and our environment. If everyone did one this would be a better world. I was dellighted with the savings on my energy bill when I stopped using my dryer.
