This is a great book that gives some real insight into the history of the humanity before history was recorded.  I found it to be super-interesting for my own reading... plus it gave me some great information I can use to give my kids the right answers when they ask questions about where people came from, why there are so many different languages, and so on. It's called "Before the Dawn: Recovering the Lost History of Our Ancestors" by Nicholas Wade.

This book includes some concepts about human evolution but is much broader than that.  It goes into the history of language, clothing, the development of difference races and nations, and really a broad historic view of humanity.

Unlike books that take a single-disciplinary approach (using one single scientific or historical approach), the author of this book combines the best of what's known from multiple disciplines including archeology, DNA analysis, historical records, and even linguistics.
