Well if you have not filed your tax return yet, you can avoid these common mistakes and get your refund quicker!
First per the IRS on a recent CNN program, they recommend filing electronically. It's quicker to transmit than snail mail and the rate of errors on paper returns is much higher. They also recommend choosing direct deposit rather than electing to receive a check by mail.
Second, per the IRS, the most common mistakes are:
1. transposing the Social Security numbers. For example, if your number begins 312-65-xxxx and you enter 312-56. Notice the number "6" and "5" are transposed or reversed. Or entering your SS# for your spouse and vice versa.
2. The second biggest mistake is choosing Head of Household status incorrectly. Carefully read the guidelines on whether the person claiming Head of Household is technically the Head of Household under IRS guidelines. If unsure, it's best to consult a professional or contact the IRS.
3. The third biggest mistake is NOT SIGNING the return, whether a paper return or electronically.
So be sure to double check these items for sending off your return. Two out of the three are easy. It's nice to know the IRS is reachable and friendlier these days. Happy Refund!
