If you know you need to start your spring gardening but don’t know what to do first, the Month by Month gardening books will help you out.  They are organized by subject, such as Roses or Lawn, and then broken down by month, so that you can easily find out what you should be doing for your roses in April, for example.  I started using it when I bought my house and inherited a garden with hundreds of plants, and I had no idea what to do when.  It’s also helpful for understanding things like fertilizing and bug control.  The books are organized by region, and I’ve seen them at Home Depot in the gardening book section.
